Many years ago I was having dinner with a cousin in Stockholm. His wife was telling me about some legal issue, and I forgot that English wasn’t her native language till she got caught up on a word. She said the Swedish equivalent to my cousin, who took his pipe out of his mouth just long enough to say “plenipotentiary”. I knew then that it was hopeless.
