Please be aware that of the eight answers which move around the
grid and are modified before entry 7 are modified in one way
and 1 in a different inconsistent way.

I have finished the puzzle but wondering if anyone can help parse 1a) lapdogs first to steal ham (7). I think I have ch?u??. I know this is one that moves, and I know what it is after modification to enter the grid, I just don’t understand the steps.

Any hints appreciated.

Look up the last 5 letters in Chambers and you'll be suitably redirected.

the answer to 31a becomes 1a after modification

I had to work backwards from a couple of the thematic entries to get the original answers but everything came together nicely.

Thank you, Kcit. Some reverse engineering done early doors, but once the theme was established I just pressed ahead with what was required.

Another tricky offering after a tough Inquisitor. All done apart from solving 24 down. I have a plausible grid entry, which reminds me of an old joke - "What was Gandhi's first name?" - (Goosey-Goosey). But I may be incorrect.
