As did I, although if I’d started at the end of the down clues I’d have sussed it much more quickly! I wonder if anyone does that?

Quite by chance I did exactly that, and the PDM came swiftly! Still had a lot of fun doing the other 99% though.

Still can't see answer to my final altered one, after a long stare. 30a Legate perhaps, chap that's formal about a word of gratitude.
Any gentle hint welcome.

Lumen, 30a. is 'chap' (3) + 'a word of gratitude' (2) in 'formal' (3).

Sorry, forgot there is a single letter before the gratitude.

Thanks mattrom. In my defence, surely that is the hardest clue in the puzzle! Rare word and odd spelling too!

A fun one today after a couple of fairly hellish weeks. Getting the final extra word first and then glancing up a couple of entries with my thinking cap on made the medicine go down real smooth.

Not really sure on the parsing for 16A but there's only one thing it can be so happy to bang it in and leave it there!

Can someone put me out of my misery - please - started late, saw the title of the book almost straight away and with only a few clues solved managed to put the author in - next two lucky solves told me what amendment to make - before I found the quote - so very much worked back to front on this one. Several answers put in without parsing - and several corrections - now going through and seeing what I was supposed to see ! But my 18d (weathered grey stone where a fish takes refuge ) is now a jumble of letters which don't say anything to me - it's not one to be amended and I have stared at it too long - all done bar this - sorry for rambling - very tired! - grateful for any help !
