ChrisE, I'm glad I'm not the only non-fan (and golf stories appeal to me even less than the others!).

He did have a wonderful turn of phrase though, even is the plots were a bit meh. My favourite is:

It is never difficult to distinguish between a Scotsman with a grievance and a ray of sunshine
