Thanks aristo - not by us birdwatchers! (Seriously, they are both fast small birds that chase insects, but you would have to be very confused to mix them up!)

Their wing shape is totally different, as is their call.

Where I live I have seen lots of swallows this year, and quite a lot of martins, but, so far, precisely three swifts!

Thanks again aristo. Ours are even more distinctive than yours; they have more distinctly sickle-shaped wings, and are uniformly very dark brown.

Ah. But I suppose if you just saw that forked tail zipping by you might mistake it for a swallow.
