17a Vulgar tosser, Clarkson? (11)
Broadcaster would fit and could refer to Jeremy Clarkson, but I would not think the rest of the clue could fairly be applied to him, so I wonder if my suggestion is correct and how it is parsed.

Broad = vulgar
Caster = tosser, someone who casts, throws, tosses
Clarkson, simply a broadcaster (with a slight dig included!)

LOI. 16
"Rival has a date with king since rising in mighty surroundings" (9).
Answer is Adversary but I can't parse it.
Ideas?

A, in clue
D, date
R, king, rex
As, since, becomes Sa as it's 'rising'
Very, mighty

A d ver sa r y.

That's all I could come uo with!

I have 2 where I am having trouble with the parsing - any help will be appreciated, thanks:
14 Blunt? Yes and no (8) I have ?T?A?G?T which I suppose is straight, which might mean "blunt" but...?
29 Abuse of one's public position is hard work (5) I have G?A?T so I think "graft", which means hard work, but...?

29 Graft can mean hard work, and also 'corruption in official life', so it's just a double definition.

Thanks, Malone. Never knew that second definition, so I have learned something!

Sealion... thanks. I rattled in the answer the other day, but checked Chambers today for 'graft', just to be sure!
