A lovely puzzle from Ifor, although the theme is a little threadbare by this time. Only issue for me was the highlighting of the third stage of the "career". Unless I've gone terribly wrong it seems like you have a choice of which cell to highlight for the 4th letter, and I can't see anything that favors one over the other. Anyone else with this issue?

My highlighting is pretty straightforward - no ambiguity that i can see.

Doh! There's actually a 4th occurrence in the grid, which I was focused on to the detriment of the 3rd one staring me in the face.

I must be very dim today. I have a filled grid, the location and have filled the bottom row (assisted by the 8 letters). No problemo, I thought. But "career"? Wiki reminds me of the story, in which the 6-letter guy doesn't do much apart from the last thing he does. I can find no 6-letter steps along the way. I imagine the replacing symbol is important, but that doesn't shed any light (sorry). I need a nudge.

Cockie, just picture the 6-letter guy making his way from the 'representation' to the 36 A row.

An hour staring has still left me bamboozled. I know what happens to the poor guy, but no word describing his predicament can be discovered. Am I looking for three 6-letter words appearing as words in the contugious cells, or are they jumbled? None of the 6-letter words in Mrs Bradford's fine work describing the action appear in the grid. Ifor isn't usually as tricky with the final step as he is today.

Contiguous of course. Fat fingers!

Cockie, I think you're concentrating on the wrong thing. The 'poor guy' is crucial... and you have to get him from A to B. (I am scared this is getting overly generous - if so, apologies!)

PS The words aren't jumbled.

Thanks, Malone. I am grateful, but still only 2/3 of the way there. I must have an error somewhere. May we continue this privately? I am at -
