Thanks Chrise,
I've got it now, but I do wish that Everyman would not assume that us cockneys are all semi-literate.

Ah, thanks Chrise, turns out I had filled in wrong answers for 4a and 6d which both fitted the crossers!

I agree that many clues seem a bit "loose". I'd like to think that's why I missed the fact that my 4a and 6d answers didn't really parse :)
... but I managed to persevere to the end. (hopefully no other mistakes!)

25d is a double definition. A self reference and a term for a joke, as in “have you heard the ? about the …”

There was an "eye-rhyming" pair, though not a proper rhyming one.
Seemingly a lot of paired letters ("SS", "MM", etc.)
The repetition of one word in two solutions didn't make a great impression, otherwise a good Everyman.

I counted 8 sets of SS, but don't see any MM? Also counted a total of 25 'S'es!

Oops, sorry, I see the MM now

Jono, what do you mean by an 'eye rhyming' pair?

I have no idea how to approach 1a or 1d.

Could you please advise?

Cautiously, so as not to startle them.

1a is hidden in the clue
1d is two 4-letter magazines stacked together
