When you make the original unclued entries 'runny', there are limited options, or in some cases only one option, to replace them. The replacing words should leave all real words in the crossing entries, but crucially, diffetent letters in the asterisked cells.

Great hints everyone, and not too much given away! I’m nearly there now, just trying to find that four word depiction. The artwork scene suggests about six words, but I can only find two. I’m assuming each word does not occur as an unbroken straight line, is that correct?

The grid is 14 cells tall for a reason - it needs to accommodate the entire height of the apparatus, as depicted in the picture, plus the compound interest, Plus the wee character!

Again, the magic of posting a question. Answers popped out as soon as I asked! Great puzzle, Charybdis. As so often, prompted a delightful discovery. The picture was buried deep in my memory and was lovely to re-visit.

Seems a great puzzle so far. Can see what to highlight etc. I seem to have an issue at 17a. Losing heart cursed bowler might bear remark (6).

I know there is a removal and what it is. However, I’m sure my crossing answers are correct and I currently have HITF _ _

h1982, there is an alternative spelling to 12d.

All sorted. I had the wrong spelling of the dam at 12d

I can only see 14 to highlight. Plus 4 for compound. I am missing an item. Not a living one.
