Thanks Cymro. I can see how that works now.

Hmm, despite Cymro's hint, and others, I'm STILL not seeing the spoonerism! Which makes me think I might have the wrong answer. I've got a word for things/people that belong to bygone times, but is the definition actually torture devices??

I enjoyed this Everyman a lot more than last week. Good to see the rhyming pair back, and loads of clever witty clues to enjoy. Favourites were 15a, 18a and 4d. I also enjoyed the cleverness of 12d.

My only quibble is the definition of 13d. Surely it should have been change or alter, rather than rot?

Same here Jules, Cymro@12 says to switch the first 3 letters of the first word with the first letter of the second word (the B, I presume) but I just can't see how that gives any torture devices.

I can't even see any word beginning with the first 3 letters of the answer added to the last 2, 3 or 4 letters.

Jules, Brendan, it’s not how it’s spelt when you swap those letters it’s how it sounds. The third letter of the answer is the first letter of Spooner’s second word.

Jono, what happens to the first 2 letters then?

They are the last part of Spooner’s first word, implying two…

Okay, thanks Jono, so your replacing the 6th letter with the 3rd letter, and then taking that letter and putting it in front of the 4th letter and then moving both of them in front of the first 2 - is that right? In what universe is that a Spoonerism?

No, I’m replacing the sixth letter with the first three. Which is what Cymro said. It works if you say out loud and ignore the spelling.
