My shortish list included geting 4, jono 7, paul 9, darla 14, geting 15, baccy 17, jono 21 (with a smiley face sticker for jono 20 even though he was coloring outside the lines).

baccy 17: I'm a sucker for subtractive anagrams, although ultimately Pericles died of the plague, so the surface may be historically dubious.

geting 15: Loved the very topical surface, although not so sure that "order to see" equates to SEE*.

darla 14/jono 7; the best of the "CLIPS in EE" clues, I thought. Very smooth surfaces. And, darla's clue anticipated one of the prizes I had picked out. I had 2 college roomies who were EEs, so no problem for me there.

paul 9/jono 21, very nice &lit/anagrams

geting 4, loved the inventive def "phenomenal display of unity" (but shouldn't society just accept the lepers rather than trying to rehabilitate them?).

But one clue overshadowed them all, and I can conceal it no longer. For a variety of inscrutable yet hair-splitting reasons, it's darla 14 with

Congrats darla and thanks to all for playing.

Our eclipse story: Mrs. buddy and her book club friends were going to head south to a friend's house near Farmington MO (normally a 75 minute trip), which was scheduled to get 100% totality for about 4 minutes at 2 pm. They left here at about 9:30 AM - and didn't get to the house in time. Traffic was backed up on the freeway, starting in St. Louis. So they did what thousands here did; pulled off the highway and watched from there. They eventually got to the friend's house, stayed still 7 pm - and took 3 hours to get home. Massive traffic jams heading back north. I got a lovely view of 98% coverage from my backyard, and watched the clips of 100% totality on the evening news. Mrs. buddy believes I got the better deal.

Well done Darla - no finer way to watch the eclipse than by listening to my favourite band! 🎸 Cheers Buddy.

congrats darla and thanks buddy - sorry to hear of the missed appointment!

i'm quite a pink floyd fan, but i'm not particularly fond of dark side of the moon (or animals, for that matter), so that track didn't spring to mind

[on popmaster (a radio pop quiz) yesterday, a part of "another brick in the wall" was played, with the question "what album did it come from?" the contestant answered "dark side of the moon"!]

Good fun Buddy, many thanks.
A smiley face sticker is all I need to get me through the week.
I wasn’t sure my 21 worked as an &Lit as the clue suggests a plural solution.
Enjoyed the clips.
Nicely done Darla!

Very nice Darla! Also liked Aristo's for sheer viscerality! Cheers Buddy and thanks for the ranking.

Thanks so much, buddy. I did think I had a pretty good surface for this one, but the competition was tough as usual.

My eclipse story, 2017 version. I took my daughters, then aged 12 and 8, up to Missouri. to try to catch the eclipse. Unfortunately, there was cloud cover most of the day plus drizzle. On top of that, my older daughter got sick with a fever and all. Not too serious: some ibuprofen helped. Near the time of totality we did catch glimpses of the moon covering the sun, and then were plunged into darkness, so it was kind of good, but also a bit of a disappointment. Sadly we couldn't make it down to Dallas as planned for this one. Egypt 2027! Who's in?

Thanks for the prizes, buddy. Not surprisingly, Pink Floyd was my favorite. And always remember, everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon.

Finally, be sure to turn up the volume as the music fades at the end.
