Any pointers to the wordplay for 12ac? Have a complete grid and the answer seems unambiguous but can't parse the clue. Seem to have two Os for the castles bit. Is it a chess thing?

12a - you need to know the symbol for castling in chess is 0-0. Hopefully fairly clear after that.

I can't see the wordplay for 3d.

Ars is Latin for art, as in Ars gratia artis.

R is extra. Definition is first two words.

My word, what a sensational construction. I am awestruck by how beautifully this has been put together. A real Easter treat. Well done, and thank you, Vainglorious.

I have the instruction and the work and author and am looking forward to the endgame. But I have an irritating gap - the last 4 letters of 44, a clue whose solution eludes me. A nudge would be welcome.

Jack Aubrey,
Re 44 ac. First 2 words are definition. The clue is an archaic 4 letter word for a tune; followed by a straightforward 4 letter word for a melody, with one letter removed, and if you've already solved everything else you'll know which letter that is.

Thank you. I had persuaded myself that the last word was the definition!

Lovely construction - thank you Vainglorious. 2 slight quibbles, just in case anyone else has them too.

First is with the preamble. My answer to 18a is in Chambers. My answer to 14a, however, is not. Has there been a misprint?

Also, I spent a long time on the SW corner because I had the wrong answer for 40a. I still think my initial answer ('roast', being 'rot' around 'gas' missing the g) was valid!

Neophyte, my 14 A is in Chambers and my answer to 18 A isn't!

Hmm. Thanks. Have now found 14a, so I withdraw that part of my quibble. And am now worrying about my answer to 18a. I have a Latin word for laws?
