I think the reference is to john cooper clarke’s “the day my pad went mad” and van is “ute” with a nod to Van the Man.
So pad* in ute.

Thanks to all who entered such a great range of clues this week. I appreciated the succinct entries from darla 5, ginge 15, peterm 20; anagrams from jono 11, paul 23; subbies from SS 16&21, buddy 3.
Other touches I liked were jono and FJ's utes, SS's Georgian windows, geting's Greek goddess, tyke's occasional NZ cricketer, buddy's reverse hidden, aristo's buxom escort.
Difficult to make a final choice from getting 6&28, jono 7&25, buddy 9, peterm 20, but this week's winner is jono 25, with his neat composite
