Had another crack and for the letters from extra words, I somehow have the sequence: DCHW

Can anybody tell me how I'm getting this so wrong?

I've only just started, but I understand the extra letters have to be treated in some way, they don't actually spell out the two words needed?

Lumen, the extra letters DO spell out two words, just not in the usual order...

Luci, are you taking the initial letters of the extra words? If so, take another look at the preamble.

No, I've taken the letters from the places instructed, can see the two characters in the grid, solved all but 3-4 clues, but I have gobbledygook:

G?EEHWNIDLAGE

I can see from the first two affected clues that it has to start "GN" or "GC", which does not inspire confidence.

Never mind, just understood, not the letter in the affected word, the letter in the full clue. Sorry about that.

Nope, read it right the first time, trying the full clue gave me:

E?LAHCDTDOMHF

Back to the drawing board.

You need 15 letters, 8 in the acrosses and 7 in the downs. One word from the 8 and another from the 7. The last sentence of the first paragraph of the preamble should help resolve the “gobbledegook”. If you’ve identified some answers that don’t seem to fit in the grid normally, that’s where to look for the extra words in the clues. (I think I have just appointed myself as “official explainer of obvious facts”: sorry about that!)

You were right first time. You just need some more letters.

Gosh, having some trouble with this one. Am I okay to enter answers which are clued normally? Would like to get my teeth into this one 🫡
