Caravaggio, I didnt understand the second half of 5d either.
Torvic, if you have not got 22a yet, think of the Isle of Man plus of corse Karen's clue
PHILIP
If you look at my previous post at 16.53, I said that I didn't understand the second part of the answer for 5d. In Chambers the word 'shuck', which is American in origin, is defined as husk, shell or pod and could be construed to be 'a covering'. I hope that is of help [to Philip particularly] and I am now satisfied with my own explanation!
I am sure that the IOM solution for 23a is correct.An incorrect answer could be arrived at by the following very doubtful reasoning:
Man = Fellow
The "it" in Fellow is "Fell"
Fell = The SKIN or hide of a beast.
Hi Philip,
Yes I did enjoy 7a, which disproves my wife's claims that I am miserable and uncouth! Can anyone give me a clue on 4d, and explain the logic of 14d.
Thanks awfully, toodle pip, Ho, Ho, Ho!
In 4d the coastal ridge is made of sand, the word for a noise follows it. The answer is a city quite far away.
In 14d to squall is to cry out loud and it contains an anagram of lucia plus l for left.
