Wondering if somebody could explain the answer to the following clue please:

Masterly sorcerers recalled the ultimate in magical tricks (9)

Answer: Magistral

I understand that magistral means masterly and the ultimate in magical is the letter L. As well as magi is sorcerers. That said, where do you get the other letters from?
