Is there a whisky theme perhaps?
I wonder if the first one is GLENROTHES.
Glen sounds like John Glenn (the astronaut) and others*.
Should it read “blended”?
Could your A be wrong?

I like your thinking. It definitely reads “blanded” but it could be a typo. I’ll look at the crossing letters again.

The A was wrong, I’ve corrected the crossing word now, so “Glenrothes” is confirmed now, thanks.

The pattern for the second clue is now G?D?E?S

Yes, I just got to that conclusion.
GUESS (suppose) with the U (a bit of usquebaugh) replaced by ODD (rum).
