I'm all for a challenge, but I must say that I have found this a rather unsatisfying slog. I'm not even quite sure why; maybe the number of really quite obscure words, combined with a difficult SE quadrant.

Anyway, despite all others being solved, I'm still unsure about 18d, and which of the two possibilities for 32d I should plump for.

18 down - (j)argon. 32 down means (ms round ean - a Scottish word meaning to give birth)
