18 , The answer means something produced by a hawk (when you cough horribly!) The'new' title indicates an anagram, 'leader' is the usual crossword stuff.

17 Is a slang, slightly rude word. Drink is a verb, and it's reversed (to turn) and add S.

Thank you for your help and I have now 17 across and 18 down. I was sure I had 6 down and the P came from a word made up of two short words in the clue for 6 down meaning a starter that can be slurped enjoyably, but it is not nice to be in it. If 6 down ends in T instead of P, I have 19 across also. Now I'm stuck on 6 down.

6 D Is a very Private Eye answer, not In The Soup, but In The S??? - both meaning 'in trouble'. (And your T is correct...)

5. Down. Is the answer "netting"? If so, then I am really struggling with 16 across!
