Seem to be quite a few people missing the bit where the Guardian site says "Not necessary for online entries."
That's the easy bit, of course. Now back to solving.

PaulT, thanks for highlighting “Not necessary for online entries”. I’m fairly sure that must be an update as it doesn’t appear in the pdf and I’m sure we would have all spotted it had it been there originally!

I agree, Jono. The 'not necessary ...' phrase wasn't there when I printed out my copy on Jan 1st.

Pendragon@21, now I see that the winner of 246 has been posted (I sincerely hope it’s one of us!) although solutions seem to still be stuck at 242.

Perhaps things are slowly starting to change under the new editor.

For obvious reasons did not post this earlier. By extraordinary coincidence, the theme movie was screened on New Zealand TV the day after the puzzle appeared.
