My other problem was the wrong letter for 4D.


Now onto finding this phrase.

All done. Great fun and thanks to Eclogue. Two small queries.

26a. I can't find wordplay to produce the second letter.

29d. I can only get the wordplay to work by using the 'wrong' past participle

26a wordplay = 2 (for its third & fourth words) 'by' 4 (for its sixth & seventh words) and 1 (for its final word)
29d wordplay = 1 (for its fifth word) and 3 (for its sixth word) within 2 (for its first & third words)

I liked this one. Challenging but fair with the opportunity to reverse engineer some tricky Meryl's ghost clues once you guessed the person.
Nice end game with multiple hints if you look for them.
I missed the ambiguity though - which ambiguity is resolved by the Meryl's ghost letters?

There's an incorrect alternative to the third letter of ''Name 1'' because two anagrams can be made from the residue - and either letter can occupy the same cell (you obviously picked the right one).

Thanks sonofrover1 (and sorry for late reply). I should have spotted the potential two letters from 3rd and 4th words in 26a. That all makes sense now.

In 29d, yes, that's my wordplay too, but I can only imagine using the 4-letter past participle in that context, not the 3-letter one.

I found name 1 a problem because I identified 2 & 3 with a specific region and took along time to realize that we were dealing merely with a nation.

Thanks drxx. I chose the corrrect option because I knew which letter I needed by the time I solved that clue. I solved the clue late because I fixed on the wrong archaic brood at first pass.

Having made a good start on this one, I am now stuck. The south east corner of the grid is my main problem. A hint for 45 across might get me going again.

Definition is the first word, parsed 3 (the second word), 4 (the fourth, fifth, sixth & seventh words) and 1 (the last word).
