“This bar” is the definition in the sense of the Inns of Court.
J (judge) +INN = jinn (a class of spirits in folklore)

I needn’t have said “in the sense of the Inns of Court”, a bar is of course an inn in the more general sense.

IMO the quote is pretty obscure and I only stumbled upon it because I was thinking of a different, more “proverbial” ending for 13d, which obviously didn’t work.

I enjoyed the quotation which was new to me but readily found in ODQ.

Am I missing something or is there no definition for 19 across?

I think 19a is an &lit clue so the entire clue is the def. as well as containing the wordplay. I'm not sure anyone who's seen The Karate Kid would agree with the def, but...

I have a full grid save for the far-too-unchecked quotation answers, and lacking an ODQ can only make a few stabs at what some of the quote words are, but not getting enough for Google to help. Can someone perhaps give an author? A little too much GWMMIT here for me.

The usual custom in Speccy puzzles is to say something along the lines of (numbers made up - they're not the real ones): 14, 7D, 22, 5A, 9 form a quotation etc. Why hasn't this been done here, I wonder. I don't have the poet (if that's what's wanted) at 20, but I can't imagine that having it will advance my being stuck one bit. I think I have the bulk of 9, but looking that word up in ODQ doesn't prove helpful.

Can't type either. 29, of course, not 20.
