Hi trevor - remember this exchange?

"Anagram from as it were?" = 'sort of'

when people say "sort of" they can mean "as it were" Also "Anagram from" is a "sort of" the available letters.

Unfortunately, I don't understand your last comment - can you elaborate?

Hi pooksahib, I'm not great at explaining stuff, but i'll give it a stab.

The phrase - as it were. wiktionary gives this definition;
"used to indicate that a word or statement is perhaps not exact though practically right."
ie.so to speak,kind of,or sort of.


When faced with an anagram, you need to sort out the available letters into a different order. So an "Anagram from" is a sort, of the letters you have.

I hope this helps, maybe somebody else can explain better than I can.

I still confuse myself.
"Anagram from as it were?"
can be split into two distinct and completely unrelated(also,in this case,non cryptic)clues.
clue 1) Anagram from.
clue 2) as it were.
both clues yield the same answer but when spliced together still seem to make some sort of sense, which is just diversionary.
Help me out here Big Dave,campanilla, all the Jim's etc ???

How about,
anagram = sort. (sort out letters).
from = of.
as it were = sort of.

How about

"Anagram" = sort of

"As it were" = sort of

Therefore you get "Anagram" from "as it were"

Make (more) sense??

How about.....it could possibly, maybe, sort of, roughly, as it were be an anagram from as it were? I'm going to print out this page and keep it for posterity, sort of. Never heard so much pannikin, but I think you got there in the end, as it were....
