I think 'blocks' is being used to confuse rather than help (like 'rendering', as mentioned earlier, perhaps?).

I've got the two blocks now, though. I'd already considered the correct book title too!

28a is a double def - I think it's the rail ('on-line') union until 2013.

Is the end game to this guess what I'm thinking ?
I've filled the grid, got the 16 wall answers with two words,
one each associated with 2 groups of 4 wall answers and the
8 letters for the book title. Can anyone give a hint about the connecting word in the grid or the book title?

It's an 'item' in the way people can be described as an item (hence the 'two separate blocks').

I'm finding the clueing very hard.
Making slow progress. Would love advice on 7 and 8 down, presume a name for 8 no idea why and no ideas for 7.

30d - The phrase is Italian and the potato is Indian (3 letters).
