Hi tyke @39
I am still benefiting from my ancestors founding a steel factory in Rotherham. My father did not go into the family business but he was born in Rotherham and his ashes are in the graveyard at Whiston parish church. I am not sure what goes on now at the Holmes Mills site, but steel was nationalised in 1947 and the family name stayed on at the works only until the 1960s, I think.

Yes, paul @40. I followed my usual course of thinking of a clue then scanning the entries, praying that no one else has used the same idea. I did see your TA/SIRE echo, but went ahead anyway as my TA had a different definition. As has been said before, 'Let the voters decide!' and you justifiably did😊😥

Many of the old steel works are still remembered. Rotherham`s new ground, New York Stadium, is located in an area which used to be known as New York - Guest & Chrimes also made the fire hydrants which we are so familiar with in New York and other cities.

I was born in Rotherham, in a farm labourer`s cottage on the Earl of Scarbrough estate, Sandbeck Hall. Roche Abbey is nearby and my Cricket Hero, Fred Trueman, was born just down the road at Scotch Spring, Stainton.

Hi again, tyke. That's quite a coincidence that you were born in Rotherham. I remember Fred Trueman well from my first visit to a test match, Lord's 1959 v India. The Indians had to start their innings in the evening facing a big England total with half an hour to go. I had never seen first class cricket from a side view before (TV view was only behind the bowler), so was amazed by the sheer pace of Trueman bowling to Roy, Contractor and Umrigar, with May, Cowdrey and co in an extensive slip cordon halfway to the boundary, or so it seemed, and the crowd baying for blood. I think India lost two wickets before stumps.

As a teenager in a school holiday I once managed to record a whole test match in a small scorebook from the radio ball by ball commentary without missing a ball. With one of your other Yorkshiremen, Geoff Boycott, making a lot of runs there were a lot of dot balls and several extra pages needed.

I only saw Fred bowl once - it was in the 60s in a County Championship game at Headingley - happy days¡ Lord's is a magical place ... one of my favourite Cricket Grounds!
