Help appreciated with a clue from this week’s TLS -

Saint's about to meet cross Calvinist scholar (6,8)

I don’t have any letters because I’ve only completed one side so far. TIA

Joseph Scaliger - Joseph's , saint's, CA, circa, about Liger, cross (animal, lion+tiger, I assume?)

Have to say, it's a very unfair clue - obscure parsing for an obscure answer. I'm glad I never attemp thtis one!

ChrisE, thanks. I think I have solved about three TLS clues in my lifetime. Most of them are way beyond me!

I do the TLS crossword every week. (Believe it or not I even won it once!) Some of the setters are easier than others; this week’s is “Broteas” who is known for their obscure, Google-proof literary references.

I have helped on some more mainstream literary references, but this one was beyond the pale!

Some TLS clues can be worked out using cryptic crossword skills (as you deftly demonstrated) but who immediately thinks of Joseph when they see the word saint?
