Thanks again Quisling. I was coming to the conclusion that the top row couldn't be fully populated. I'll press on later. 👍

Hi!

I'm fairly sure this one is beyond me, despite having most of the answers. But before I throw in the towel, could someone give me hints to one down and three down, please?

Thanks,
Suzannah

Hi Susannahj, 1d is an anagram of pity if and then the last letters of “the impoverished”.

3d is a single letter abbreviation of Tesla, followed by a five letter verb meaning rambles.

Thanks quisling. It's not having the clue lengths that has made this such a slog for me. I would have got 1D in seconds with a clue length.

Right! Let's see if I have any hope with the grid fill...

Well, after a couple of hours juggling words around on a Scrabble board I'm still well and truly stumped. 🤔 I think I'll need a hefty nudge in the right direction if I'm going to progress but for now just to check I'm not trying to fit the wrong things, is 'Elite force....' (4th across) 6 letters? I have a convincing answer but...

It's a bit of a direct one but is the 3rd across ('Star split...) entered as a continuous string?

If this is a bit too much of an ask, while people are still solving, no problem.

Thanks.

“Elite force ..” is the third across, Granama1, but it is 6 letters.. “Star split …” is the fourth across and both are entered as continuous strings

I didn't think I'd stay the distance here, but now I'm falling at the last hurdle. The 'final entry' escapes me.
Is it similar to the other thematic entries?

Yes, mattrom, it is. Do you have Bradford’s? And do you have the upper and middle ones?

Yes, Quisling, I have the 3 entries (with help from Bradford's). It's the third paragraph in the preamble that has me stumped.
