The only thing I can think of for Party here is FINE as in Fine Gael the Irish party, but looks a stretch. Any help much appreciated

Looks like AMASS from the def and checkers, but in what sense is statecraft = mass?

State - MA, Maine and SS, craft, ship?

ma - state (massachussets not sure of the spelling!)
ss - craft, boat

i thought you might have been right, malone, but i checked - maine is me
