Quite a challenge, I think - it was a relief when I got a few crossers in the grid.
Not sure if the gimmick has been done before, but I can't remember seeing it done (and done so well).

The same trick was used a few years ago in CAM where the unclued lights were all colleges in both Oxford and Cambridge. Magdalen (Oxford) was entirely within the grid but ...

Well remembered, cockie - I might have had it been a few terms ago, but 'years'? No chance!

Any tips as to how one goes about starting to grid some of the cold-solved answers? I haven’t done much counting yet but is there a sensible ‘way in’ that I’m missing…?

Look at the answers beginning with 'p...' - one of them has an oversized letter count but the other two fit the grid as is (some care should be taken positioning the longer ones).

Very enjoyable. It became more straightforward once some of the answers were in place. That certainly helped with solving the last few clues. I don't remember the full context but EV 400 needed something writing outside the grid.

Thanks to Kcit for an enjoyable and testing challenge. I doubt that I will find much use in conversation for some of the new words I learned but none the worse for that!

To my shame, I fell hook, line and sinker for the gender misdirection in the “Inheritor” clue. And I spent far too long trying to see a way of producing the thematic word in one of the 12 cell spaces before light dawned.
