I have solved 4a, and by accident I revealed 6a.

I cannot find any anagrams.

Everything else is gibberish to me.

What does everyone else think about it?

Hi druh6sm,

Have a look at 15a where the 5th word is the anagram indicator.

Or 23a, where the 3rd word indicates that part of the answer contains another part.

7d where a common wine takes in (think about it) the sound of a letter.

Picaroon isn't the easiest of setters for someone fairly new to cryptics. I do think you should try the Quiptic crosswords to get used to some of the 'conventions' used in cryptic crosswords.

Best of luck!

Thank you.

I attempt every online crossword the guardian has to offer.

I fail every time.

Even the Quiptics stump me - I usually solve 4/5 clues.

I’ve been doing them since February but I don’t seem to be improving at all.

All I can say is persevere. It does take time to start recognising key words, or elements, in a clue which suggest what kind of clue it is. It's probably worth looking at 225 each day which explains, in a lot of detail, how the previous day's Guardian crossword was solved.

A couple of sites that explain the various types of clues....

https://www.crosswordsolver.org/guides/how-to-solve-cryptic-crosswords

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2010/may/03/how-to-solve-cryptic-crossword

It might be worth getting a book which will explain them in far more detail, and give examples to work through. There are several on Amazon if you search for 'how to solve cryptic crosswords'
