Jazzgirl, I didn't use Bradford's for this, but I've just checked - yes, it would have given the three (of a kind) answers. I did use Google to read up on that aspect - still a bit of a cheat, but I told myself that I was learning at the same time, not just taking the answers from a list! I think I was helped by spotting the theme itself pretty early on.

I have a copy of The Spectator Book of Crosswords published in 2000 by Pan with an introduction by Doc. The setters are Mass, Jac, Doc, Columba and Ascot. There are some fiendish puzzles, including my beloved radials. Way more difficult than recent offerings. I have just checked Amazon and it is on offer at a bargain £6.79. The only review is a one star which made me chuckle since the purchaser would clearly have had no idea of the standard of the puzzles.

Bobbycollins, thanks. That was interesting, especially seeing the names of those great (and greatky missed) setters. I was toying with the idea of buying the book... then thought, 'But what if the puzzles had been started?'
