A wordsearch brings up targeted, terrenes and turreted but can't see that any of them work.

29 I think your T is wrong. It’ looks like a reversal of a word for quarrel followed by an anagram of ‘needs’

Ah, I see where the T might come from, but the vegetable in 22d is not a root vegetable ;-)

Yes 22d is not carrot.

I think it must be marrow.

I assume the garden creature is a worm. So flipping that gives us mrow . That leaves ar but ar is not half of root .

Please put me out of my misery !
