I'm also struggling with this damn crossword!
5D Figure characters have spread...(5)
I have G???? - it could be GUESS but I don't see how or why!
Ant ideas anyone?

Alan, 5d is grown I think, because 14A is Tangle, one of the few clues I can work out, (NG in TALE)

5a appoint,any help with 1d. this crossword gets worse.

cazzy, I guess you mean 9A (not 5A)but how do you explain it? - I can see "name" perhaps being "appoint" but .....?
I too am still stuck on 1D - I hate this bloody crossword!
