I can't parse 17a although I know my answer is right - can anyone enlighten me please?

justsolve, I'm not sure about the US terms. Definitely 29. My guess for the other one is 20.

17d) I still don't get this, despite a few earlier posts on this.
My solution = "bear".
Not sure how the rest of the clue fits in, though...

Got it..."in cave" is the crucial bit.

All finished apart from 25d which I can't think of a word that fits the clue. I'm also one who is staring at 17a but despite the hints on here the parse has not revealed itself yet.

First half I found tough but I was in and out so a bit unfocused. Second half was OK and fairly rapid. Never heard of 1d either.

25 a 4 letter word for "spare" ( as of frame) is dropped from in front.
17 I needed help for. Just swap words 2 and 3 in the clue (I hope I never see another one like this!)

i should have said that 25 is a thematic clue.

I see ChrisE. Yes I concur. Thought 24a a bit weak too.

I think COD 13a but no real standouters today.
