I'm not sure if there are many versions of the source material (it wouldn't surprise me) or if the setter has invented a few more, but one visit was more than enough for me.
A novel idea and great fun (I think).

I do admire you and others drxx. I have no idea how to begin this weeks Inquisitor. I don’t think you can help me either. I get very disheartened sometimes.

I'm sure you'll get there, jogamel - the normal clues have wordplay with a single letter anomaly in each (I ignored the anomalies at first until I could see something in the grey areas - then wiki came up with the antique performance}. This is an old theme even for me!
As a hint, 5d starts with the usual 3 letters for 'beer' and it's followed by a breakfast item you might remember from another comedic 'breakfast' - FUNEMN?
Happy to help in any way...

...the unlikely words for single letters in the normal clues all work in a similar way - like 'ay for 'orses.

A couple of the wordplay only clues fell into place (1a and 20a) which sort of confirmed the 'oddities' I was finding in other clues. Then the grid filled rapidly without working out the logic for each oddity....some of them feel rather tenuous.

I haven't started this yet but am looking forward to it after reading Drxx's comment at @4 and figuring out the theme.

However, despite living in and around the requisite area all my life to date, I am a tad concerned about the source material.

in 30a for example, after working out the last three letters from 'French china' and then using the Chambers app to find the answer, I had to visit 4 online sites before finding verification for the first letter.

All this, of course, is predicated on me having the right theme:-)

It's more random than the classical lingo where you are, brendan - and some of it has just been invented by the setter (I think).
I'm cheering too, jogamel (but you'll be cursing some of these homophones - I certainly did}.
