I can only see one answer to fit 15d, which fits "determined effort" but can't work out the parsing.

By the way, I keep meaning to ask what "PDM" means (not seen it in this thread, but it seems from context to equate to "ah, I get it now").

If I've 15d right, it is also the first name of a fictional character known for solving (not just crosswords!)

I also missed the sad news giving rise to this particular themed prize puzzle.
I got off to a slow start with 28 and 13 but once I recognised the theme things started to flow. I enjoyed recalling a couple of the clues referenced in 23 - 14 was a particular favourite and made me chuckle. Agree with Chris and Jono, 15 must be the most famous TV cruciverbalists.
Perhaps surprisingly LOI was 12.

Just 8d and 12a left though I don't understand 1a. If I have the answer right I can't see the magic performer part or the link to the theme. I may come back to finish this and let the subconscious do the work. Though we are not enjoying the lovely day the rest of the country appears to be getting here.

I agree about 1a - must be missing something.

If you google the answer to 9a plus 5a you will discover the “magic” element to this person. You will also find that his demise hasn’t been noted yet on the internet.
