*chrise, I grew up in the Chicago area, but can't recall hearing any songs by Mel Torme. I must have heard many, but nothing stuck in my mind. I don't know whether that means I'm a cretin, or that I have good taste...😕

Thanks, mprs.
I 've come to associate Nat King Cole with "The Christmas Song", that's who I've heard by far the most often. Johnny Mathis would probably rank second, I've heard him more often than Torme.

Mel Torme does a good job with it, can't deny he's a good singer. I've heard his version a few times. Seems he was mostly a jazz performer, and I wasn't so much into jazz during the period I'd have been likely to hear him.

I’ll never forget the shock of learning that Oxford University Press was Mel Torme’s publisher.
