Peer Review 593
Welcome to our friendly competition to compose a cryptic clue to be judged by your fellow contestants.
You may enter as many clues as you like. Everyone is welcome, particularly new entrants. Feel free to explain your clue, if you think it will help, or to ask another entrant to parse their clue.
However, please don't comment on the merit of a particular clue before voting opens.
Clues should be posted by 12 noon (UK time) on Friday May 19, when voting opens. Voting closes at 8 pm (UK time) the same day.
Entrants should vote for their favorite clue, indicating that entrant's name and clue number. The entry with the most votes wins and its composer sets next week's competition. The setter has the deciding vote in the event of a tie. The setter will declare the winner and award an online prize.
A story (probably fiction) about the famed American lexicographer Noah Webster (who improved the language by getting rid of all those unnecessary u's as in "favorite") goes: A woman, eager to impress with her knowledge, said to him did you know that the only word in the English language in which "su" is pronounced "sh" is sugar? To which Webster replied, are you sure?
This week's challenge is a choice of:
SURE (4)
SURELY (6)
Have fun! I expect Buddy for one will have great fun with surely. 😉
