Roof, 23 is a straightforward "drop the first letter of a word" clue. Definition is "a fire".

And Roof, if you are still puzzled about the anniversary, try the last three words in that clue.

I'm still baffled by 23d - I can't find either a fiddler or a fire. Are my letters right? I haven't parsed the T:
?E?T?R

I looked up 50th anniversaries and found Dark side of the moon and JFK's inauguration - both of which I know more about than this theme!

Enjoyable. More so now that I've seen the track listing and am listening to the album!

But South London solvers will want to understand the setter's name, perhaps especially with this theme!

Have managed to finish without help from forum so must be easier than usual! No knowledge of theme but gather from your comments that Brockwell has done well.
COD 6d very clever but 2d a close second .

Thanks anyotherbizniz

I think i've got the answer now. I enjoyed looking up "catch a fire", though I don't recall the titles of many of the songs. this is normal for me.

Meanwhile I have worked through most of the crossword, finally getting 27ac (I'd forgotten the hint on the thread). But I have two left:

18d for which I have ?O?S?E?? Are my crossers correct? Could I have a hint please.
29ac for which I have D???S? Again are my crossers correct? I can think of a word that would fit, but I can't parse it.

Ah ha. I've just got 18d, which I think confirms my answer for 29ac, though I still can't parse it.

FOI was 16ac though I've never used this word for pledge.
Loi will be 29ac and COD was 6d,

I started thinking the crossword was hard, but once I got a few it got easier and the Forum helped with the theme.

It's raining hard here now. What hosepipe ban? Actually, I don't think it includes Exeter and East Devon.

Hi roof
In 29 the inspectors are in the police.

roof, crossers correct in 18d. Definition "briefs" as in "files", e.g. espionage sense.
