Thanks Mattrom for clarifying 14. Seems obvious now, although I think I was thrown off by the placing. I thought âon gentleâ would have implied that it came after the âspeakingâ, not before. This has often confused me in puzzles.
I shouldnât have waded into grammar debates that I would definitely lose. Chambers has it as both though. Preposition âexceptâ and conjunction âwere it not that â. I guess that the former is closer to how we would use âbarâ so youâre probably right.
Forgive off-topicness, but the Saturday Indy has an excellent puzzle by Serpent, one of my favorites. He's prone to musical Ninas and Brendan should enjoy this one.
