Am I alone in wondering if some of the later comments are perhaps straying into 'overly revealing' territory?

I'm with foinavon and planks. Gridfill too easy, some dodgy clues and I have no idea about the second character, the clash doesn't make any sense to me unless I have the wrong clash. And I am a big fan of the subject and well aware of the one individual that I can identify.

Figured it out now I think. Dreadful preamble.

I know nothing about the subject but thought the construction was good and the preamble cleverly ambiguous, including the contribution of the 6 letters. A shame that most of the clues were 'entry level' and I have an issue with a couple of extraneous words that don't contribute to their wordplay, one of which I took to be an extra word until near the end. Enjoyable but over too soon.

i dont have any issue with the preamble, other than the fact it gave the length of the extra words. i have never seen this before, and it didnt seem necessary.

Tend to agree that gridfill was easyish, but preamble was fair. Didn’t need the word lengths, though - that defeated the point of there being other potentially extraneous words to choose from.

If that is istenem's first Listener then it's a pretty good start. 👍

It wasn't a Herculean task but nicely constructed and a neat endgame. The Inquisitor took longer but I enjoyed this more.

Curiously given some previous comments I found the preamble clearer than is often the case - overall a fun puzzle, with clues on the easier side. We do seem to have had a run of easier than average puzzles recently - maybe there is a real stinker imminent to balance it out.
