Thanks Quisling. I must have tried everything apart from putting a . on the end!

I'll have another look and see if I can resolve the 'work' bit.

10 resolved - i was trying to use a different missing letter which resulted in the message referencing a different setter, which i had convinced myself must be right!

Thanks Quisling, all sorted. I got fixated on a four letter 'work' for similar reasons to AndyP. 😄 Sometimes it's difficult to break out of a particular train of thought.

That was quite an epic. I'd put it at a D on the Magpie scale.

Thanks Gila - particularly for the laugh when the message dropped out. 👍

This is a work of genius: I wonder what gave Gila the spur to think "Ooh, I know what I'll do!"
As for the instructions: I need to do more than that. I'm exhausted.

I have one unresolved issue: what is the 'stipend' in 6? I've looked, but presumably not in the right place.

The stipend is a three-letter obsolete Scottish word, which includes the extra letter. It’s in Bradford’s. “Assigned to” gives the next two letters

Biggus, it's a 3 letter word for a stipend paid to a Scottish parish minister's widow. A shortened, uncommon, 5 letter word.

(Looks like a girl's name).

32 - defn is last word (i knew it as a word through scrabble but not the defn). You need an abbrev for Lane (think addresses), within an anagram of timber (and an extra letter).

2 - defn also last word (as verb). Succeeded is normal abbrev (think kings/queens), which along with I forms container for a word for fool (with letter missing) and a word for extreme
