Can someone please explain fully the "deep-level wordplay" of these (guessed) answers:
2. Gather English honour that's left inside (8) ASSEMBLE?
7. One running with wobbly legs (8) SMUGGLER?
8. 60s revolutionary had jumped (8) TWITCHED?
17. Garments embraced by thin girls (8) CLOTHING?
18. Current's rising until now (2-2-4) UP-TO-DATE?

I accept of course that I could be wrong.

Please enlighten.

2 I can see Assemble, gather, and I can see E, English, MBE, honour, with L, left, inside, E MBL E, but nothing to lead to the Ass.

Is there a theme, special info about there being no wordplay for parts of the clues?

8 Has Ted, 60's revolutionary, with Witch inside and 7 has an angram of Legs...

Is this a themed crossword, only I can see ASS, MUG, CLOT, TWIT ?

Is this an April Fool's Day puzzle? The first 4 have words omitted from the wordplay - ASS, MUG, TWIT, CLOT.

I thought they may have been really sneaky, and not included instructions in a preamble.

I see #18 is a down clue, so my parsing was incorrect.
