Long ago, when the world was young, I passed an O-level in which this subject cropped up, but Time has erased much of what I once knew. I have a complete initial grid fill and can see the three initial entities and I know what I must draw ... but the 14 extra words mean nothing to me, and thus I can't see what must be changed (although I know where). A gentle guide to rolling back the clouds of age would be welcome.

Hi cockie,

The bottom right character is turned into something by the fourth character (who is top left) when the former is being pursued by the bottom left character.

Hope that's cryptic enough!

Of course - silly of me. Still don't get - or need - the 14 extra word connections.

7 can be associated with what she was turned into in a broad sense, and the other 7 can be associated with what she was turned into in a specific sense. I only figured this out after completing everything else, however, so I agree that the 14 words are unnecessary.

Many thanks, Karla. You have made me very smiley. The construction- even down to the transformation leaving real words - was masterly, I thought. I have only one loose end: I can’t wholly parse 38a. Is the third letter M or S? I incline to M.

I think it's an R. Misprint in the third word of the clue.

Thank you, pegster. Of course! I had forgotten that there was a Mark 2. Unforgivable oversight: stand in the corner, Jack!

I have solved everything but unsure of the construction of the drawings.I can see the characters that have to be connected and what the drawings are meant to be but are there starting and finishing points, and are the drawings of a particular size?

I can see the characters in the North-West, South-West and South-East and have made the change to one of those. I can't see the central character and I suspect I may have some of the misprints wrong. Between the first four which seem to indicate a colour and the last six I have what could be a metal. Back now to my Dictionary of Classical Mythology.
