Thank you both, got one so maybe I'm off now

Hi all, I've been proofing a friend's doctoral thesis for the last couple of weeks and, as I didn't want any distractions, I decided to keep away from crosswords.

I've just now finished this and really enjoyed it but I don't understand 3d - the definition is clear and I saw an earlier comment that it's a homophone but, for the life of me, I can't think what of?

Hi Brendan, drop the middle letter of the grid entry and change the third last to an “e. Pretty average homophone, imho

Thanks for tips, didn't put it on recycling but it's Tuesday and baffled by 13, 33 and 23 but have managed to get everything else so thanks for leg up..... Maybe another hint

23d - the key here is "finally" referring to the previous 4 words - definition is "act"

13a - the "12" here refers to the time not a clue and it's one of the thematics
