Look below your D, ap.

All done, except for 41 across. I have an answer for 38 down which seems to work, but it produces a non-word at 41 across. Any hints would be appreciated.

Aren't quite a few of the Across entries non-words?
41 A has a five-letter amswer, one going to the perimeter.

Near the end - of my tether. Just 39A to complete the grid. I have three of the letters - does the unchecked cell hold another two?

No, just one letter ('winds' is a reversal indicator).

Philitin, no, you just need one letter. The last word in the clue is the definition, 'winds' can mean 'turns' and 'nipping' can mean holding/holds...

Malone, many thanks. I had stupidly overlooked the fact that I needed an extra letter for the right hand column.

Thank you drxx and malone, Got it now - after spending, nay, wasting so much time messing about with winds from Siberia and the Arctic. Which now begs the question of where the two-lettered cell is. I was hoping for an early night!!
