Wordplay may give one wrong letter, I think it does. A steer would be nice.

Lumen, the odd-looking word is definitely in Chambers. The answer is defined as 'the art, especially in India, of painting...on the hands, feet and body'.

Improve = four letters, (if it was your health, you could be on the ....)
One - the usual and a bit of henna is one letter, going inside the rest.

28a - the Scots dialect word for 'lively' (also a French word!) contains a 3 letter word for, (to) 'trifle' (with), its first letter is extra [and it's reversed].
