Agree with above comments. I'm sure anyone trying for first time will be aware of more difficulty to come! - Picked up paper, took my son to the dentist/hygienist and completed it whilst waiting It may be the first time I have finished one without any need to access google, BRB etc) - Just a couple of proper nouns to look up upon return, as new to me.

Candledave - totally agree with your #9 - I've been waiting for a relatively easy one to introduce a buddy, who is a keen and successful puzzler, to the Listener - and here it is. It shouldn't scare her off, and will introduce many of the usual features like letter-transformations in clues spelling out thematic messages, oblique definitions, and end-games with hidden themes to be highlighted, in a readily do-able form. Her Bradford's will arrive today.

Thanks for this, Opsimath.

- but still don't get the specific reference of the title!

It is derived from the rest of the inscription.

Gem94 -
yep, I could see that - but I would have expected a more specific connection - there's an electronic music entity with this title - and together with 15a this sent me off on a wild goose chase in search of a musical theme for a while.

Whereas if you're right, it's just a woolly Latin reference, not even a direct translation, to part of the remainder of the revealed inscription. A bit weak, I feel.

Can anyone see a more witty layer of significance in the title?

Can anyone explain please the rationale for the missing W and E within the thematics?

The puzzle seems to work fine without them. Confused.

If I remember it correctly the preamble should answer your question.

Well yes, but given the 4 letter words to be entered are real words, I don't see the point of the missing letters which don't seem to be doing anything for the theme either.

Surely Opsimath could have just clued those as 4 letter words?

n00b, maybe it's just that W (and) E are the protagonists
