I thought much the same, Brendan - though I didn't like the 'Be A' being in both the clue and the answer.

I am certain the letters are correct and I agree BEATEN is probably the correct answer to the clue. I am thinking that the wrong clue has been give. ie. A misprint

The only word that fits those letters in Chambers is AVAUNT meaning advance/move on and indicated as “archaic/obsolete”.

So that also looks odd. Hmm.
