20 Across:- "The hard or tough outer covering of an invertebrate such as a sea urchin or starfish". (4) T-S- . I plumped for "TUSK" and, when I checked several sites, one stated this answer, whereas all the rest said "TEST" - does anyone know which one is correct, or do both suffice?

I think it’s TEST. Another word for a testa, or hard shell, and specific zoological term. A tusk is a tooth, rather than a shell, and would be wrong imho

wordnik.com specifically gives TEST as "A hard external covering, as that of certain amoebas, dinoflagellates, and sea urchins."

Another vote for TEST = testa

Thanks, Quisling! Test seems better, but it's unusual that one well-known site should be convinced otherwise. A boo-boo, methinks!
